Overview

Walk on bright blue ice surrounded by the spectacular scenery of Iceland’s highest mountain peaks on a glacier hiking tour in Skaftafell Nature Reserve. This is the perfect exhilarating adventure for travellers in South-East Iceland with limited time or who are looking for a great introductory glacial experience.

Vatnajökull is both Iceland’s and Europe’s largest glacier. It towers over the luscious Skaftafell Nature Reserve which is a part of a large national park named after Vatnajökull. It is here, in the South-East corner of the country where you will meet your local glacier guide and board a large 4×4 vehicle that will take you to the glacier’s edge.

You’ll stop near Falljökull, an outlet glacier or the larger Vatnajökull ice cap. After a short walk to the ice sheet, you’ll stop to put on the safety equipment required for your trip. The use of the glacier gear is included in the tour, and your guide will be on hand to help you put it on and show you how to use it.

You’ll then travel through a beautiful landscape of pure white snow, deep, blue crevasses, and otherworldly ice sculptures. Your guide will tell you interesting facts about the glacier’s geology and the region’s history and folklore.

There will be plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and take countless photos and selfies on top of the glacier. After about an hour on the ice, you’ll return to the 4×4 vehicle and make your way back to the base camp at Skaftafell.

Explore Europe’s largest glacier and enjoy the beauty of the Icelandic nature as well as the solitude found so far from human interference on this fantastic glacier hiking tour. Book now to secure your spot on this popular excursion.
