Fagradalsfjall Volcano in Geldingadalur Valley began eruption on the 18th of March, 2021. The eruption lasted 6 months, with lava constantly flowing from several craters. The eruption ended in September, and during the time it was active, the volcano created a lava field that covers an area of 4.8 km2 (1.9 sq mi). The volcano erupted again for 18 days in August of 2022.

On this tour, you’ll be picked up from Reykjavík by your friendly, knowledgeable guide. You’ll travel to the Reykjanes Peninsula, where you’ll hike to the volcano in Geldingadalur Valley. You’ll get plenty of time to view the hardened lava, explore the dormant volcano, and take plenty of photos.

Get ready for a long hike across rugged terrain. It takes around an hour and a half to reach the volcano from the parking lot. So, make sure you are able to walk for at least 3-hours on uneven ground before booking this tour. Your guide will have crampons to lend you should there be any ice en route.

You will stay at the eruption site for at least two hours, allowing you to fully take in the surrounding spectacular scenery. Your guide will take photos of you in front of the now cooled magma, making sure to capture different angles if the weather allows.

Good to know

  • The hike to the volcano takes about 1 ½ – 2 hours one way. You’ll travel on uneven ground, so make sure you wear proper boots, suitable for this hike.
