Day 1 – Welcome to the Land of Fire and Ice

Your 12-day volcanic adventure starts as soon as you touch down at Keflavík Airport. After landing, grab your bags and rental car and hit the road toward Reykjavík, your first stop on this fiery adventure. As you drive through the otherworldly landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula, you’ll pass sprawling lava fields—a powerful reminder of Iceland’s volcanic heart. Arriving in Reykjavík, the city’s vibrant energy will welcome you as you settle in for the night, gearing up for the volcanic escapades that lie ahead.

Day 2 – The Reykjanes Peninsula & Fagradalsfjall Volcano

Today, dive deeper into the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the earth’s fiery power is on full display. If luck’s on your side, you might even catch a glimpse of an erupting volcano in the distance. Begin with a visit to the bubbling geothermal areas, where steam and hot springs create an otherworldly atmosphere. Then, stand between two continents at a tectonic divide, where the Eurasian and North American plates pull apart. Before returning to Reykjavík, visit the recently created lava fields at Fagradalsfjall Volcano.

Day 3 – The Golden Circle & Reykjadalur Valley

Day 4 – Kerlingarfjöll Mountains

Day 4 takes you deep into the heart of Iceland’s Highlands as you explore the majestic Kerlingarfjöll Mountains. Day 7 – The Westman Islands & Eldfell Volcano

Day 7 takes you on a ferry ride to the fascinating Westman Islands, a volcanic archipelago with a rich history. Once you arrive, you’ll hike up Eldfell Mountain, the fiery heart of the 1973 eruption that dramatically reshaped the landscape. As you reach the summit, you’ll stand atop a living volcano, where the earth still feels warm beneath your feet, offering incredible views of the islands below. Dive deeper into this volcanic story at the Eldheimar Museum, where the aftermath of the eruption comes to life. If you’re visiting in the summer, keep your eyes peeled for puffins—they’re as much a part of the island as its volcanic past. Day 8 – Katla Volcano & Black Sand Beaches

Day 8 leads you further into South Iceland, where you’ll travel under the vast Mýrdalsjökull, a glacier concealing the mighty and active Katla Volcano. As you drive beneath this sleeping giant, you’ll feel the thrill of being in one of Iceland’s most volcanic regions. Your journey takes you to the striking black sand beach of Reynisfjara, where powerful waves crash against dramatic basalt columns and sea stacks. Nearby, the Dyrhólaey Promontory offers sweeping coastline views.   • Thakgil Canyon Buggy Tour: Drive around a black sand beach, over a river, and into the mountains by Þakgil Canyon. A 2-3 hour buggy tour, an English-speaking local guide, and the use of overalls and a helmet are included—no prior experience needed.

Day 9 – Lakagígar Craters

Day 9 immerses you in the surreal landscape of the Lakagígar Craters, where history and geology weave together in one of Iceland’s most mystical regions. The vast lava fields, born from the mighty Eldgjá eruption of 934 and the devastating Laki eruption of 1783-84, stretch before you, blanketed in thick moss that shifts from bright green in the rain to a muted grey in dry weather. As you explore, you’ll be struck by the almost otherworldly beauty of the area, from the dramatic Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon to the striking Dverghamrar basalt columns and the intriguing Álftaversgígar pseudo-craters. By evening, you’ll settle into your accommodation in or near Kirkjubæjarklaustur, reflecting on the ancient forces that shaped the land around you.

Day 10 – Vatnajökull National Park & Öræfajökull Glacier

Today, you’ll head deep into the breathtaking Vatnajökull National Park, where the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier is ever-present, dominating the horizon. At the glacier’s southern edge lies Öræfajökull, an imposing stratovolcano that erupted in 1362, giving the surrounding region its name, Öræfi, meaning “Wastelands.” Yet today, the area is anything but barren—lush fields and woodlands now thrive between glacial floodplains. As you explore, you’ll discover the wonders of Skaftafell Nature Reserve, where glaciers and waterfalls meet. Visit the mesmerizing glacier lagoons, where icebergs drift serenely, and stroll along the famous Diamond Beach, where glittering ice fragments adorn the black sands. After a day filled with nature’s wonders, you’ll return to your accommodation in Kirkjubæjarklaustur Town.

  • Amphibian Boat Tour: Sail amongst the enormous icebergs on Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. This tour is especially suited for families with young children as well as photographers looking for a great shot of the ice. Included is a guided tour in English and the use of a lifevest.
  • Zodiac Boat Tour: Get a front-row seat to see giant icebergs floating on a glacier lagoon. The small Zodiac boat can get close to the icebergs, giving you a unique perspective over the bergs. Includes the use of floatation overalls and lifejackets.

Day 11 – Back to Reykjavík

Day 11 offers a flexible journey as you make your way back to Reykjavík. You can choose your own adventure today—whether that means driving straight to the capital to dive into its vibrant city life, revisiting your favorite spots along the South Coast to see them from a new perspective, or discovering new gems along the way. If you’re up for more exploration, consider a stop at Hjörleifshöfði cape, a rugged outcrop steeped in history, or take a detour to the charming town of Selfoss for a taste of local culture. By evening, you’ll find yourself back in Reykjavík, ready to unwind or continue your exploration of this lively city.

Day 12 – Departure

On your final day in Iceland, you can soak in the sights of Reykjavík one last time before your flight. When it’s time, you’ll set off on a scenic drive through the volcanic landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the earth’s fiery origins are never far from view, heading toward Keflavík Airport. You’ll have a choice of three options for your rental car. See details for each option in the boxes below. We only work with highly reputable dealerships, ensuring a smooth ride throughout your holiday.

The vehicles for all levels are current models, no older than two years. They all come standard with a medium protection package, including CDW (Collision damage waiver), GP (Gravel Protection), Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW), Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), and a Theft Waiver (THW). They also come equipped with free Wi-Fi with 3GB total. You will also get 24-hour roadside emergency services from the car rental agency. In the wintertime, all cars have winter tires.
