Explore the southern coastline of Iceland; from the crashing waves of Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach to the glittering Sólheimajökull Glacier. Those looking for the perfect introduction to this land of ice and fire need to look no further.
You will be picked up early in the morning in a comfy minibus, and driven out of the busy city, through the peaceful countryside, to the quiet town of Hvolsvöllur. Here you’ll stop for a quick snack before moving on to the attractions on the south coast.
First up is at the powerful waterfall, Skógafoss. The Skógá River flows southwards from the nearby glaciers before making a 60-metre vertical drop, creating this beautiful cascade in the process. As the ground underneath is very flat, you can walk right up to the waterfall and take some unique photos.
From there, you’ll head to the black beach of Reynisfjara. Cliffs made up of hexagonal columns, massive rock stacks out of the ocean and, in the distance, the arch Dyrhólaey will make up your view here. In the summer, you might see a puffin or two nesting in the cliffs while the winters bring massive white waves which crash upon the black sands with great force.
Reynisfjara is close to the charming town of Vík, your next stop. Here, you can take in the beautiful views of black sands, mountains, and massive glacier-covered volcanoes. You’ll learn more about volcanoes at the Icelandic Lava Show in Vík. Here, eruptions are replicated with molten lava, you’ll feel the heat emitted from it and hear it sizzle in a dazzling display.
The glacier Sólheimajökull, your next destination. Here, you will walk around the glacier valley, exploring the edges of the ice cap. Though you will not go on the ice itself, you will be able to see the stunning landscapes the glacier has created.
The last stop before being dropped off back in Reykjavík is at another waterfall, Seljalandsfoss. In the summer a path leads you behind the falling spring water but in the winter, the snow, icicles, and frost gives it a fairytale appearance.
