About Snorkelling & Diving Tours

Iceland is geographically unusual. It sits on two tectonic plates as well as a volcanic hotspot, and both of these natural phenomena have contributed significantly to this island’s unique landscape.

On a Snorkelling & Diving Tour, you’ll have the opportunity to explore this magnificent scenery underwater, discovering lava cliffs, geothermal hot springs, and wildlife most visitors to this country will never even hear about.

On a Traveo Snorkelling & Diving Tour, you’ll be transported from your accommodation or a designated pick-up point to the dive or snorkelling site. There, you’ll be given all equipment needed for your underwater excursion. After you’ve gotten your gear on, you’ll step into the water with a certified PADI guide and explore the wonders found below the surface.

Snorkelling & Diving Spots in Iceland

There are a few snorkelling and diving spots found around the country. Undoubtedly, the most famous one is Silfra Fissure, located in Þingvellir National Park.

The park sits on the boundary of two tectonic plates which are constantly pulling apart, creating fissures and canyons in the process. One of these fissures is Silfra which is filled with meltwater from a nearby glacier. As the water flows from the glacier, it filters through a porous lava field, making the water in Silfra crystal clear and providing unparalleled visibility for snorkelers and divers.

Another popular option is Strýtan, an underwater geothermal vent near the northern town of Akureyri. This towering chimney-like geological formation rises from the ocean floor and spouts 79°C hot water from its cone. The warm waters found near Strýtan attract various wildlife from small nudibranchs to huge wolffishes, and, on occasion, humpback whales.

The Reykjanes Peninsula provides us with two spectacular diving sites: the North Atlantic Ocean near Garður Town and Kleifarvatn Lake. The former is a favourite diving spot for professional divers in Iceland. Here, you’ll find kelp forests, colourful algae, soft orange corals, and various marine species.

Kleifarvatn Lake is located in the middle of a volcanic terrain. That means the whole area, including the lake, is geothermally active. On a dive at Kleifarvatn, you’ll visit bubbling, underwater hot springs which are just a 100 metres from the shores.
