About Snæfellsnes Day Tours

Snæfellsnes Peninsula is a little stretch of land located in West Iceland. Though not large, it contains a wide variety of natural attractions, which have given the peninsula the nickname ‘Iceland in Miniature’. Here you can find both black and white sand beaches (the latter is a rarity in Iceland), majestic mountains, cascading waterfalls, charming towns, volcanic craters, and, of course, a glacier.

The area is named after Snæfellsjökull Glacier, and when travelling the peninsula, this magnificent feature will be clearly visible throughout your journey. According to folklore, Snæfellsjökull gives off mystical energy that many visitors claim to feel when in the glacier’s vicinity.

Snæfellsjökull and a few other places on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula have been popular in pop culture for a couple of centuries. The glacier was the entryway for the subterranean adventure in the 1871 Jules Verne novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Other parts of the peninsula have been used as background in both film and TV, most notably the 2013 film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and HBO’s Game of Thrones series.

Key Attractions You’ll Visit on a Snæfellsnes Day Tour

Each tour is different, and when you pair it with the wide variety of attractions one can visit on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, it can be hard to name every single place one visits on a Snæfellsnes Day Tour. However, there are a few key locations at which all tours make a stop.

Perhaps the best-known natural attraction on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula (aside from Snæfellsjökull Glacier), is Kirkjufell Mountain near the town of Grundarfjörður. This majestic mountain was featured in Game of Thrones as ‘the mountain like an arrowhead’, North of the Wall. The mountain and the nearby waterfall are a popular photography spot for both amateur and professional shutterbugs alike.

Djúpalónssandur Black Pebble Beach is another must-see when visiting the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. To get to the beach, one needs to walk through a labyrinth of natural lava formations which look like they were plucked straight from a fairytale. Close to the beach are four large stones of different weight. In a bygone era, these were used to measure fishermen’s strength to determine their position on the boat. Try to see how you would measure up by trying to lift these massive stones!

Scattered around the peninsula are countless small towns and villages. All Snæfellsnes Day Tours on Traveo will make a stop at least one of these charming settlements. You could stop at Stykkishólmur on the north-side of the peninsula. Here, you’ll find colourful houses and a big and beautiful harbour. The jet-black church near the town of Búðir is also a popular stop, and so are the villages of  Arnarstapi and Hellnar, especially in the summer when seabirds such as kittiwakes, shags, and puffins can be seen from the harbour.

Frequently asked questions

You can visit the Snæfellsnes Peninsula year-round. The attractions found here are stunning in the winter, blanketed in snow and under the mystical Northern Lights. However, they are equally beautiful in the summer, surrounded by green grass and illuminated by the Midnight Sun. So we recommend visiting the Snæfellsnes Peninsula whenever you are in Iceland.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula is about 156.5 kilometres or 97 miles from Reykjavík. Depending on the weather, it can take between 2-3 hours to drive from the capital to Snæfellsnes.

Snæfellsnes is a 90 kilometre (55 mi) long peninsula which stretches out from West Iceland.

Dotted around the peninsula are countless towns and villages with shops, petrol stations or restaurants. There, you should be able to find bathrooms when you are on the road. On a Snæfellsnes Day Tour, your guide will make regular stops so people can either purchase drinks and snacks or use the bathroom.

We recommend you wear layers of clothing. That way, you won’t be too cold when outside but not too hot when you enter the warm vehicle. Ensure your outer layer is both wind and waterproof; it can get quite windy near the ocean. It is always a good idea to bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf, even in the summer. And don’t forget good, waterproof shoes!
