Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Iceland

On the first day of your tour, you will touch down at Keflavík International Airport and collect your rental vehicle. From here, you will embark on a scenic drive across the Reykjavík Peninsula, where you will be greeted by stunning views of moss-covered lava fields. After a short drive, you will arrive at your accommodation in Reykjavík.

If you’re feeling up for it, you can take some time to explore the city. Reykjavík is known for its vibrant culture, unique architecture, and beautiful scenery. Your travel advisor will be able to provide you with a list of interesting sites to visit that are located close to your hotel. Whether you’re interested in art, history, or nature, Reykjavík has something to offer everyone. Take your time to explore the city and soak up its unique atmosphere before settling in for the night.

Day 2: Exploring the Golden Circle

On the second day of your tour, you’ll embark on a journey to the Golden Circle, a popular destination for tourists in Iceland. The Golden Circle is a route that includes three main attractions: Thingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall. You’ll have the opportunity to explore each of these locations and take in the breathtaking natural beauty of Iceland.

First, you’ll visit Thingvellir National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to a rift valley where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. You’ll be able to walk along the rift and see the stunning landscape created by the movement of the plates.

Next, you’ll visit the Geysir geothermal area, where you’ll see geysers erupting and experience the power of Iceland’s geothermal energy. Finally, you’ll visit Gullfoss waterfall, where you can witness the force of the water as it cascades down a two-tiered cliff.

At the end of the day, you’ll retire to your accommodation on the South Coast, where you can rest and reflect on the natural wonders you’ve experienced on your journey.

Two people share a snowmobile and the driver needs to bring their driving licence. Age limit for passenger is 8 years.
  • 2 Hour Horse Riding Tour: Meet the friendly Icelandic Horse. Includes 1-1.5 hour guided horseback ride with a specially trained guide. Use of riding helmets, boots & rain wear. Minimum age is 8 years.

Day 3: Hiking in Thorsmörk

Your day will start early as a guide picks you up for the adventure ahead. You’ll be boarding a super jeep, a large vehicle designed to tackle the rugged terrain of Iceland’s Highlands. Your destination is the Thorsmörk Valley, a remote and breathtakingly beautiful area that is only accessible by a super jeep or hiking.

As you make your way to Thorsmörk, your guide will point out the stunning scenery surrounding you. You’ll cross rivers and navigate through rocky terrain, all while taking in spectacular views of glaciers, mountains, and valleys. Once you arrive in Thorsmörk, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the area on foot, taking in the valley’s natural beauty up close.

After a day of adventure and exploration, you’ll return to your accommodation in South Iceland. You’ll have the chance to relax and reflect on the day’s experiences while also looking forward to what the rest of your Icelandic adventure has in store for you.

Day 4: Visiting the South Coast

On the fourth day of your tour, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the stunning beauty of South Iceland. You’ll visit several waterfalls, including Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, both of which are known for their impressive height and power. You’ll have the chance to walk behind Seljalandsfoss, an experience that is sure to leave you in awe of the natural wonder.

After visiting the waterfalls, you’ll make your way to the black-sand beach of Reynisfjara. Here, you’ll marvel at the unique volcanic rock formations and dramatic cliffs that line the shore. Keep an eye out for puffins, which can often be spotted nesting in the cliffs during the summer months.

As the day draws to a close, you’ll make your way to your accommodation in the charming seaside village of Vík. Here, you’ll have the chance to relax and unwind after a day of exploring some of Iceland’s most breathtaking scenery.

Day 5: Discovering Vatnajökull National Park

On this day of your tour, you’ll embark on a scenic drive towards Vatnajökull National Park. As you make your way towards the park, you can stop at Skaftafell Nature Reserve for a hike if you’re feeling adventurous. The reserve is home to stunning hiking trails that take you through some of Iceland’s most breathtaking landscapes, including glaciers, waterfalls, and lush greenery.

After your hike, you’ll continue your journey towards Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most famous natural wonders. Here, you’ll witness the spectacular sight of icebergs floating in the lagoon, creating a picturesque view that is truly unforgettable. You’ll also visit the Diamond Beach, where the icebergs from the lagoon wash up on the shore, creating a unique and beautiful scene.

  • Jökulsárlón Zodiac Boat Tour: Get a front-row seat to see the giant icebergs at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The small Zodiac boat can get closer to the icebergs than the larger amphibian boat, providing you with a unique perspective over the bergs. Includes use of floatation overalls and lifejackets. Minimum age is 10 and children must also be taller than 130 cm (4’3”).
  • Jökulsárlón Amphibian Boat Tour: Sail amongst the enormous icebergs on Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. This tour is especially suited for families with young children as well as photographers looking for a great shot of the ice. Included is a guided tour in English and use of lifevest. No age limit.

Day 6: Exploring East Iceland

Your exploration of East Iceland will take you through many breathtaking fjords and charming fishing villages. The scenery will be stunning as you drive along the winding roads, taking in the beauty of the rugged landscape.

You’ll have the opportunity to explore Hallormsstaðaskógur, a beautiful forest that is home to Iceland’s largest natural woodland. While there, you can keep an eye out for the legendary Lagarfljót Worm, a monster said to inhabit the nearby Lagarfljót Lake.

After a day of exploring, you’ll spend the night in or near Egilsstaðir, a town located on the banks of Lagarfljót. This small but vibrant town is the largest in East Iceland and offers a range of activities and attractions for visitors. You might want to take a stroll along the river or visit one of the town’s many restaurants and cafes to sample some local cuisine. Whatever you choose, you’ll surely enjoy a peaceful and relaxing evening in this charming town.

  • Vök Nature Baths: Vök Nature Baths are surrounded by nothing but the untouched nature of East Iceland. Day 7: Relaxing by Lake Myvatn

On your 7th day, you’ll have the opportunity to explore some of the most breathtaking sites near Lake Mývatn. This area is known for its stunning natural beauty, and you’ll get to experience it firsthand.

In addition to Lake Mývatn itself, you’ll have a chance to explore the Dimmuborgir Lava field. This unique landscape is made up of twisted rock formations that were created by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. From there, visit Námaskarð Pass, where you can take in the otherworldly geothermal activity in the area.

After a full day of exploration, you’ll spend the night in the area, allowing you to rest and recharge before your next adventure.

Day 8: Driving the Diamond Circle

On this exciting day of your tour, you’ll embark on a scenic drive along the Diamond Circle, one of Iceland’s most iconic routes. Your first stop will be at the magnificent Dettifoss Waterfall, known for its impressive power and size. You’ll have the opportunity to take in the breathtaking views and capture some unforgettable photos of this natural wonder.

Next, you’ll visit Ásbyrgi Canyon, a unique horseshoe-shaped valley steeped in mythology and legend. You’ll be able to explore the canyon’s winding trails and marvel at the towering cliffs that surround it. After taking in the stunning scenery, you’ll make your way to the charming town of Húsavík, one of the best places in the world to go whale watching.

Finally, you’ll return to your accommodation in the Mývatn area, where you can relax and unwind after a day of adventure and exploration.   • GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths: Unwind and enjoy the stunning view at GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths in the town of Húsavík. GeoSea limits the number of guests, allowing for a more peaceful and relaxing experience for those who visit. Bring with you a swimsuit and a towel but those can also be rented onsite. No minimum age.

Day 9: Sights and Sounds of the Troll Peninsula

Your journey along the Troll Peninsula starts with a visit to the picturesque town of Siglufjörður. This charming fishing village boasts colourful houses, a scenic harbour, and a fascinating history that you can learn about at the award-winning Herring Era Museum. Afterwards, you’ll continue your journey to the town of Hofsós, known for its stunning views of the fjord and its beautiful infinity swimming pool, which dates back to 1958.

Before arriving at your accommodation in northwest Iceland, you’ll stop at the iconic rock stack Hvítserkur. This natural wonder rises out of the sea and is said to resemble a drinking dragon. Take in the breathtaking views of the North Atlantic Ocean and snap some photos of this unique geological formation.

As the day comes to a close, you’ll settle into your cosy accommodation, ready to rest up for the adventures that await you tomorrow.

Day 10: Exploring West Iceland

Begin your day with a scenic drive to West Iceland, where you’ll be immersed in the area’s rich history and natural beauty. You’ll visit two stunning waterfalls, Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, which are known for their unique geological formations and picturesque views. Next, you’ll stop at Deildartunguhver hot springs, the largest hot spring in Europe, where you can witness the power of natural geothermal energy.

Afterwards, you’ll visit the historical site of Reykholt, where the famous Icelandic writer Snorri Sturluson once lived. Here, you can explore the ruins of his former home and learn about his contributions to Icelandic literature and culture.

Finally, you’ll head to your accommodation in the Borgarnes area, where you can relax and take in the beautiful surroundings. This day will be filled with unforgettable sights and experiences that will give you a deeper appreciation of Iceland’s fascinating history and natural wonders.

Day 11: Discovering the Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Today’s tour itinerary will take you on a journey to discover the wonders of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. You’ll start by visiting Arnarstapi, a small fishing village that offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll along the cliffs, taking in the stunning scenery and catching glimpses of the local wildlife.

Next, you’ll travel to Djúpalónssandur, a black sand beach known for its unique rock formations and otherworldly atmosphere. You can test your strength by lifting the “lifting stones” that fishermen once used to prove their worthiness for the job. You’ll then move on to Mt. Kirkjufell, one of Iceland’s most iconic landmarks. This mountain is famous for its distinctive shape and is a popular photography spot.

After a full day of exploring, you’ll return to Reykjavík, where you can relax and reflect on the incredible sights and experiences you’ve had over the last few days.

  • Viking Sushi Boat Tour: Head to sea on a Viking adventure! From Stykkishólmur town, you’ll board a boat which will take you around the countless islands found in Breiðafjörður Bay. Keep an eye out for birds such as fulmars and adorable puffins. The highlight of the tour is when the crew pull up the nets and allow guests to try out fresh scallops and sea urchins. Day 12: Departure and Goodbye to Iceland

On the final day of your tour in Iceland, you can explore Reykjavík a little if your flight doesn’t depart until later in the day. Reykjavík is a vibrant city with plenty of sights to see, including the famous Hallgrímskirkja church and the Harpa Concert Hall. Take a stroll through the city centre and check out some of the local shops and cafes before you have to depart for the airport.

When it comes time to leave for the airport, be sure to allow plenty of time to return your rental vehicle to ensure a safe and stress-free journey back home. Though your time in Iceland may have come to an end, the memories and experiences you’ve gained over the past few days will stay with you for a lifetime.

You’ll have a choice of three accommodations levels. See details about each one in the boxes below. All accommodations for this tour have been hand-picked by our local travel experts.

For budget-level, single rooms will be allocated to bookings for one person.  Shared twin/double or triple room(s) will be arranged for two or more people. Groups with an odd number of participants will be allotted a single room in quality-level. Children and teenagers will be arranged in the same room as their parents. Additional cost may occur if additional room(s) is needed.

Please keep in mind that hotel quality in Iceland varies between regions and that not all locations offer quality-level accommodations. At those particular locations, comfort level accommodations will be arranged, which has already been calculated in the upgraded price. We do our best to accommodate special requests, but additional costs may incur. 

Budget

Nice and comfortable rooms with shared bathroom facilities and shower located in farmhouses, guesthouses or hostels, in good locations with breakfast included. An example of this in Reykjavík would be Kex Hostel. 

Comfort

Comfortable rooms in three-star hotels or quality guesthouses, centrally located, very close to popular attractions. Private bathroom and breakfast included. An example of this in Reykjavík would be Fosshotel Rauðará. 

Quality

Car

You’ll have a choice of three options for your rental car. See details for each option in the boxes below. We only work with highly reputable dealerships, ensuring you a smooth ride throughout your holiday.

The vehicles for all levels are current models, no older than two years. They all come standard with a medium protection package including CDW (Collision damage waiver), GP (Gravel Protection), Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW), Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) and a Theft Waiver (THW). They also come equipped with free Wi-Fi with 3GB total. You will also get 24-hour roadside emergency services from the car rental agency. In the wintertime, all cars have winter tyres.

The driver must hold a valid driving licence which they have had for at least 12 months before the date of the rental. Age requirement varies for each level, and you can find more information on that in the boxes below.  

Please note that off-road driving is illegal in Iceland.

Budget 2WD

2WD vehicle such as a VW Golf, good for city driving and shorter trips. Fits up to 5 travellers & light luggage. No Highland capabilities. Driver must be at least 20 year old.

Comfort 4x4

  • More than 24 hours before scheduled tour departure time: 100% refund. Some day tours might have a different cancellation policy, in which case it will be clearly mentioned in the “Good to know” section of the tour.
  • Less than 24 hours before scheduled tour departure time: 100% cancellation fee. Some day tours might have a different cancellation policy, in which case it will be clearly mentioned in the “Good to know” section of the tour.
  • More than 7 days before scheduled tour arrival date: 15% cancellation fee
  • Less than 7 days before scheduled tour departure date: 75% cancellation fee
  • Less than 72 hours before scheduled tour departure date: 100% cancellation fee
  • 45-30 days before scheduled tour arrival date: 50% cancellation fee
  • 29-15 days before scheduled tour arrival date: 75% cancellation fee
  • 14 days before scheduled tour arrival date: 100% cancellation fee

Scheduled international and domestic flights are non-refundable, be they a part of a package, multi-day tour, or any other service purchasable on the Traveo website, unless the Cancellation insurance is purchased. If a cancellation insurance is purchased, a full refund is given.

If flights are a part of a tour listed as a Day-Tour, standard terms of cancellations of day tours apply to a full refund. For cancelling and refunding of private flights (flights specifically arranged and scheduled for you personally or your group in specific), please contact your service agent.

If your tour is cancelled by the tour provider due to weather conditions or any other environmental circumstances you will always receive a full refund. Exempt from this are any rescheduled second tries of tours which already have been serviced as a first departure. In the case of a volcanic eruption taking place on Icelandic soil stopping you from getting to Iceland, you will also receive a full refund on all products booked on Traveo.

All booking change requests must be made via email by the person who submitted the original booking request.

Changing the number of people in a booking to a smaller number is considered cancellation for the change in number of participants.

  • Packages: 

For multi-day tours and packages, all requests for changes must be made minimum 7 days in advance. Please note that we might not be able to fulfil your changed requirements due to lack of availability, though we will always do our best, and do offer alternative options.

Depending on how far in advance a tour package has been booked and when changes to a booking are requested, an administrative fee of 5000 ISK may be charged each day/night of the itinerary that is modified. Additional supplier costs may still apply depending on the changes requested.

For bookings made within 60 days of arrival, changes can be made without incurring the administrative fee until services have been confirmed and the travel documents have been issued. However, for bookings made 30 days or less before arrival, the administrative fee and any applicable supplier fees may be charged due to the short processing time.

  • Day tours and activities: 

Day tours and activities booked on the Traveo.is that are serviced by independent operators can be changed up to 24 hours before departure.

  • Transfer of bookings: 

A booking may be transferred from one party to another, provided that the new party upholds the terms and conditions of the booking. An administrative fee of 5000 ISK will be charged for the transfer, and both parties must assume joint liability for this fee and any other costs that may be incurred by changes to the booking.

  • Parties travelling together: 

Should two parties wish to book separately but travel together, they should inform travel agents of this prior to booking. If a co-travel request is sent after the booking process has been finished, the change to a package is counted as a tailoring and is subject to a 5000 isk service fee.

  • Significant changes to packages: 

If a package is significantly changed from the original package setup/route as offered on the site, the product will be considered to be a tailored tour and might be subject to a 15% service fee of the total price of the package. This does not apply to added nights at the end or at the beginning of a package as this does not change the original package setup/route.

For budget-level, single rooms will be allocated to bookings for one person.  Shared twin/double or triple room(s) will be arranged for two or more people. Groups with an odd number of participants will be allotted a single room in quality-level. Children and teenagers will be arranged in the same room as their parents. Additional cost may occur if additional room(s) is needed.

During the booking process you will be able to choose a pickup location and starting time. If you do not show up for the scheduled pickup time and location stated on your booking, your reservation is non-refundable.

If you do not know your pickup location at the time of booking, you can choose to update your pickup location later, up to 24 hours before tour departure. Please call the number listed on your voucher if you do not receive a confirmation of your pickup location.

Traveo cannot be liable to any loss, damage, accidents, injuries, death or sickness during your tour. The same applies for any changes in tour schedule due to weather, strikes or any other force majeure. Tour operators reserve the right to change routes, schedules and itineraries if needed because of weather, road conditions or should the necessity arise because of unforeseen reasons or circumstances.

We advise all travellers to purchase a comprehensive travel insurance to minimize possible losses due to unforeseeable situations during your travel. Traveo does not offer any travel insurance, so please contact your preferred private travel insurance company.
