Reach new heights on an ice climbing and glacier hiking tour in South Iceland. This fun and challenging small-group adventure provides you with a unique way to experience Iceland’s beautiful glacial landscapes. No prior climbing experience is needed, making this the perfect tour for any thrill-seekers travelling the region.
You will find the massive Mýrdalsjökull Glacier in South Iceland, not far from the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. One of Mýrdalsjökull’s outlet glaciers, Sólheimajökull, is your adventure destination for the day.
You will meet a certified glacier guide at Sólheimajökull Parking Lot. After introductions, you’ll receive all the necessary glacier gear for your excursion. These include a harness, helmet, stiff climbing boots, crampons, and an ice axe.
Once you are geared up, your guide will lead you past a glacier lagoon to the glacier’s edge. There, your guide will recheck your equipment before you step your crampon-strapped foot on the ice.
You’ll follow the glacier guide, travelling past deep crevasses until you reach the ice wall. Your guide will set up ropes and attach them to your harness. Then, with an ice axe in each hand, you’ll begin to scale the frosty feature.
There is something undeniably special about climbing a medium that frequently changes, such as a glacier. Surrounded by harsh but impressive landscapes, you’ll dig your axe in a wall that tomorrow will look completely different. Your guide will give you clear instructions on how to best scale the ice wall and make sure you feel comfortable and completely safe the entire time.
After your climb, you’ll explore the glacier a little longer on foot before heading back to the parking lot. Your guide will show you glacial moulins, blue crevasses, dark ash from eruptions of nearby volcanoes, and other spectacular features. They will also be ready to answer any questions you may have.
Grab an ice axe, put on crampons and explore a glacier in-depth with this fun, challenging, cool, and rewarding adventure. Book now to secure your spot on this fantastic tour.
